NYCDCC selected Tutor Perini and O&G Industries to build a new 1,040 bed jail in Chinatown. Cost was first projected at $8 billion to build out local jails, not will cost at least $15 billion, and counting.
Closing Rikers cannot happen by 2027 since those replacement jails are not expected to complete until 2031 for Queens and Bronx.
Current jail population at Riker is about 6,628. Total borough based jails will house 4,500 detainees. If Rikers were closed… where do they go?
