May 29, 1953, the 29,035-foot Mount Everest was reached by Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay. Were they the first?

George Herbert Leigh-Mallory did three expeditions. He and his climbing partner Andrew Irvine was last seen ascending near the summit around June 6, 1924. Irvine’s foot was found. Did they reach the summit 29 years before the famous pair who lived to tell? Could there be others that we don’t know about?
