Tickets, due to Mayor Eric Adams’ new trash putting out time, fume residents.

Announcement was first made back on October 17, 2022. Effective April 1, 2023:

  • If garbage is in a secure container with a lid, it can be placed at the curb beginning at 6 p.m. the night prior;
  • If garbage is in trash bags, it can be placed at the curb beginning at 8 p.m. the night prior;
  • Bundled cardboard, which does not attract rats, can be placed at the curb beginning at 6 p.m. the night prior.
  1. If the objective is to fight rat infestation, why should neighborhoods/blocks with no rat problem be ticketed?
  2. Not all residents have the same sleep schedule. During fall/winter months, it gets dark after 4 pm. Certain people, given health and safety concerns, would not go out when dark.
  3. First offense tickets should serve as warning, not $50. How often and how much sanitation tickets were issued before the new regulation went into effect?

The new hours should apply to where geographically there is a rat problem, not the entire City; timing may need to be changed between Daylight Saving and Standard time months; and those who have already paid their $50 in a non-rat infested area should be refunded.
